Who We Are |

In 1998, Mr. Jack Gallivan, Salt Lake Tribune Publisher Emeritus, spearheaded the movement to organize the Crusade for the Homeless Foundation. He organized the Crusade Roundtable, which consisted of distinguished citizens from private industry, churches and government. Read a message from our founder The original goal was to raise at least $35 million toward an eventual goal of $100 million to establish an endowment, the earnings of which would be distributed annually in grants to supplement the budget shortfalls of over 20 Utah agencies that serve the homeless population. In 1998 and 1999, the Crusade made a one-time appeal to various major donors, foundations and the public. Subsequent to the disaster of September 11, 2001, and the ensuing economic downturn, the Crusade did not achieve its original fund raising goal. Accordingly, the Crusade made the decision to use the earnings from its endowment of approximately $4 million to participate with other funding partners to influence homeless projects through seed money and leveraging larger public and private funds. From 1998 to 2001, the Crusade provided significant grants to housing projects, shelter projects, case management, and preventive solutions. While the placement of homeless families in supportive housing remains a critical priority, work has begun now on placing single chronically homeless persons into permanent supportive housing. National models for studio and one-bedroom apartments for single homeless men and women demonstrate that studio projects relieve pressure on shelters and give the single homeless person the opportunity to have a home, maintain a job, and progress to full independence. Accordingly, The Crusade has made studio and one-bedroom housing for single homeless people its major priority for the next ten years. To eliminate chronic homelessness within 10 years, the Crusade has restricted its endowment earnings to support the Housing First initiative. We are confident chronic homelessness in our community can be eliminated with the combined efforts of individuals, churches, corporations, local, state and federal governments. The Crusade For The Homeless Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose Federal Tax number is 26-3109283. Your donation is tax deductible, but we encourage you to consult your tax advisor regarding your individual circumstances. |
