How to end homelessness: provide permanent housing. It’s called Housing First. Sounds simplistic, yes: but it works. Experience in many states across the nation shows 84% success in rehabilitation of the homeless and their return to respected, productive citizenship. Experience in Utah to date indicates and even higher success rate. Actually, it’s more than housing that brings dramatic rehab results. It is supportive housing: support, that is, in 24 hour management of each Housing First complex: ready access to all counseling, mental or physical treatment, job procurement – any service necessary to rehabilitation. All of which brings to the individual the self respect, self reliance and the willpower essential to achieving permanent rehabilitation. Most of all Housing First succeeds in the realization of the once homeless that somebody cares. If you find joy in caring for others, be a good neighbor, join Crusade for the Homeless Foundation.
